suit & vessel
...
a few years back i thought of writing/drawing sci-fi comic like Futurama but in Malaysia setting, the problem is i don't know much from the scientific angle but it clearly represents or based on Msia today but in the future settings/human achieved space-faring colony/civilization. In the process one of the thought was designing a suit (symbiotic-exo suit) that human will ever be wearing in their entire life since depleting of resources, an exo-suit that can shape-shift and adopt to multiple weather conditions and also mimicking previous style/fashion stored in the database, and also the suit make us comfort cooling, warming and don't need to wash that often, since it could be like our own skin, feels like it and can be programmed to mimick any clothes/textile/textures and feel/movable/animated tattoes/screen/cloaking/stored informations/Google version of spacesuit (collect information/data for the wearer presented as an options + human decision-making/location for teraforming/creating environment suitable for human to adopt & survive.
Then recently i discovered this post apocalyptic fashion by Demobaza from Bulgaria which is so fucking amazing, some i could just wear them for the rest of my life without ever buying, changing or replacing any other clothes/style i swear...and i also did some research on spaceships or lightweight spaceships like the one in anime Cowboy Beebop pilot by Faye & Spike, and found back old games like WipeOut that's very suitable for solo or 2 person seater spaceship and combine together with the Demobaza style.....fuh... ...
Anastasia Garuda P.I. is a KL noir comic zine between me and writer/sister Julya Oui. We came up with the idea that this Transwoman character's struggle for her transitioning, trying many things from doing sex work, working as hotel receptions and decided the impossible which to become private investigator. It's kinda inspired from old noir detective comics but the setting is in Kuala Lumpur and she's a transwoman struggling to meet her ends meet and save up for her transitioning.
At the moment still experimenting if its possible to redo this in a simple gif and pixela art format with the aesthetic of 80s retro rpg storytelling....fingers crossed...

post-pixel-punk
Last few days a go i was on a very long hour bus ride, i downloaded pixel art drawing app and was scribbling, and i deleted it scared that it took a lot of space. I've been inspired by pixel art and 80s B-grade sci-fi movies during the 80s and during college times in the 80s, playing my housemates computer games like the Lucas Art's 'Full Throttle', 'Day of Tentacle', 'Sam&Max hit the road', 'Street Fighter2', 'Raiden', '1942', 'Prince of Persia' etc, etc, and some other classics pixel games totally inspired me further. Recently i discovered this pixel art artist Valenberg, for his panoramic, atmospheric (rain!!! i'm a Pluviophile), futuristic, cyberpunky culture visuals that totally bring back a lot of nostalgia fo rme and further diving found this great synth music that reminded me of 80s-synthy-cyberpunk-soundtrack and also an enjoyable interesting interview from the artist and the Cyberpunk musician Victor Love, good read and all in the links down below, happy diving:

How one Malaysian went from having a gun in his face to the director of the NY Gay Pride
Julian Sanjivan, 34, wants to take the Malaysian LGBT conversation to the world stage. — Picture courtesy of Julian Sanjivan
KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Now, Julian Sanjivan is a 34-year-old Malaysian who directed the New York edition of this year’s Gay Pride parade, arguably the largest ever in the history of the annual march.
But it was not so long ago that he had still been in Malaysia, where his sexual orientation made him the target of discrimination, harassment, and alleged violence by the authorities.
“…I was surrounded and harassed by a group of policemen who pointed a gun to my face and threatened to use it for merely voicing my rights,” he told Malay Mail Online during an interview.
“They laughed, mocked and called me derogatory terms in the Malay language for being gay. All this happened very close to my work place.”
For the gay man then living in Muslim-majority Malaysia that is intolerant of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities, the incident was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.
Sanjivan packed his belongings and moved to the United States four years ago, in search of the tolerance he did not find at home.
There, he became the first Malaysian to be accepted as a fellow in the Community Solutions Program that was funded by the US State Department.
He was chosen due to the recognition he had gained for his work with Malaysian non-profit PT Foundation, which deals with HIV education, awareness, support and care for the most at-risk populations affected by the disease.
But it was not until he heard news from back home that authorities were clamping down on LGBT rights movements that he decided to stay on in the US. He applied for asylum, which was granted by the US government last year.
“When the government decided to give the organisers of Seksualiti Merdeka a very difficult time, it went downhill from there for the LGBT community in Malaysia,” he said.
The annual festival to promote sexuality rights began in 2008 and was banned by police in 2011, after Muslim groups alleged that it promoted homosexuality and sexual promiscuity.
The organisers attempted to challenge the ban through judicial review, which was dismissed by the High Court in 2012, and the decision was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2013.
Petaling Jaya native Julian Sanjivan at the the NYC Pride March 2016, performing his duties as March Director. — Picture by Craig L. Williams (courtesy of Julian Sanjivan)Sanjivan said, however, that it was the message from the highest echelons of the government regarding the LGBT community that cemented his decision to stay abroad, when Putrajaya blamed the group for local HIV cases and said it needed to be “nipped in the bud”.
But he explained that his choice to remain in the US was not about escaping the discrimination at home; rather, Sanjivan said it was his mission to make the rest of the world see the plight of the community here.
“That was the turning point and I vowed to myself that I will let the world know the human rights violations the LGBT community faced back in Malaysia,” he added.
“Now, I have the platform to do just that.”
The Petaling Jaya native currently residing in New York was last year elected as a member of the Executive Board of Heritage of Pride, which gave him the responsibility to organise this year’s parade in New York City.
From his new vantage point, he said the biggest issue for the LGBT community in Malaysia was that its legal environment criminalised their behaviour.
Although homosexual behaviour is not illegal per se, Malaysia has colonial era laws that criminalise anal and oral sex as carnal intercourse against the order of nature, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Shariah laws also prohibit cross-dressing, which is the violation most often used to detain and prosecute Muslim transgenders who, according to a 2014 Human Rights Watch report, are regularly harassed and abused by local religious enforcers.
“This is made worse by regressing government policies and decisions that violate basic human rights that curtails the freedom of speech and inability to express one's true identity without fear,” Sanjivan added.
Muslim-majority Malaysia vehemently objects to the perceived rise in LGBT activities, which it deems to be an assault against Islam together with growing calls for greater civil liberties.
LGBT communities are regularly denounced in sermons, together with other groups and ideologies that local religious authorities consider to be unacceptable.

Getting the media and public to be more caring about LGBT

PETALING JAYA: A localised guidebook on gay and transgender people has been produced to create greater sensitivity in the media and among the public.
The guidebook was produced by the American media group, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and has been translated into Malay and Mandarin, according to Star Online.
It incorporates local phrases such as Mak Nyah and Pengkid.
A civil society group Justice for Sisters produced the translated versions, and printed about 1,000 copies for the media. Copies are also available for download from the websitejusticeforsisters.wordpress.com.
The 44-page guidebook contains explanations on gender identity, acceptable terminology, problematic language, case studies and existing anti-transgender laws in Malaysia.
The president of the National Union of Journalists, Chin Sung Chew, was quoted as saying the union would disseminate the information to its members, but the editorial tone of newspapers and other media was determined by the publication’s editors and not the reporters.
In the report, Transmen of Malaysia founder Dorian Wilde urged media outlets and bloggers to be more sensitive and less sensational when reporting on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) issues.
He said English-language online media and Chinese-language newspapers were more progressive, while noted newspapers in English and Tamil were making progress.
However Malay-language newspapers tended to shame the LGBT community with outrageous and defamatory statements.
KUALA LUMPUR: A gender activists group has released a transgender-identity guidebook in an effort to promote greater sensitivity by the media and public on LGBT issues.
Justice for Sisters volunteer S. Thilaga said the book was based on a media guide by the American media watchdog Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLADD), and translated to Malay and Mandarin and updated to include local phrases.
“Western sensitivity guides don’t translate in Malaysia, we’ve our own colloquial terms and local nuances with words like Mak Nyah and Pengkid,” she said.
The NGO printed about 1,000 guides for the media, LGBT allies and educators; while the public could also download it from JFS’ websitehttps://justiceforsisters.wordpress.com.
The 44-page guide in Malay covered explanations on gender identity, acceptable terminology, problematic language, case studies and existing anti-transgender laws in Malaysia.
Transmen of Malaysia founder Dorian Wilde called for more sensitivity and less sensationalism by news media and bloggers when reporting on LGBT issues.
He applauded the English news portals and Chinese newspapers for their progressive stance on the issue, adding that English and Tamil newspapers were catching up too.
“However, Malay papers tend to actively shame the community, going beyond problematic language to making outrageous and defamatory statements,” he said.
Wilde urged the media to be respectful, saying there was no reason to go out of the way to insult and ridicule.
Both groups said the guidebook was not meant to provoke or alienate the media, but an attempt to improve public understanding on a usually taboo topic.
“Like racism, if we don’t talk about it, how will it be resolved?” said Wilde, adding that they would be open to dialogue with media and the public.
When contacted, National Union of Journalists (NUJ) general secretary Schave Jerome De Rozario said while NUJ was open to educating reporters on gender sensitivity, having dialogues with LGBT groups would be up to it’s the Exco’s approval.
NUJ president Chin Sung Chew said they could disseminate the information to its members, but it would be up to members to use it.
He added that the editorial tone was determined by the publication’s editors not the reporters and there could be cultural resistance from some publications.
“We shouldn’t speculate whether a person is transgender or not, journalists need to go by the facts especially in court and criminal cases,” he said.
Transgender issues have long been a controversial issue in Malaysia, as a Muslim majority country which criminalised cross-dressing.
The issue had become increasingly public following transgender rights activist Nisha Ayub receiving the International Women of Courage Award and a high profile court case over the constitutionality of anti-transgender laws.

Oppose amendments to Act 355, says Nisha Ayub
KUALA LUMPUR: A transgender activist is urging the people to oppose proposed amendments on Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) 1965 that was tabled as a private members bill by Marang MP and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang last month.
"This law will not just effect the Malays but the whole Malaysian people . Its already such a huge problem in the Shariah law we have right now which is not standardised in each country and now they want to impose hudud?" said Nisha Ayub on her Facebook page.
"Dear Malaysian, don't be only a follower but use your own brain to think the effect of such imposing and dictatorship of power . Think about the future of our country not as individual but as a nation that is full of diversity and harmony.
"The future of our country is not in their hands but its on ours has we have the power of vote . Don't we want our country that use to be before where we live in peace and harmony without diversion ? Think carefully as our action now determines the future of our country.
The amendment in the act which is also known as Act 355 seeks to remove the penalty limitation of three years imprisonment, six strokes of caning and a fine not exceeding RM5000.
While both Hadi and the government claim that the amendments have nothing to do with the Islamic penal code, critics claim that the removal of the limitation would allow Kelantan to impose hudud laws.
The amendments state that it would not include the death penalty. It must also be noted that the state hudud enactments in Kelantan and Terengganu have provisions that allow 100 lashes of caning.
Nisha said that a religion cannot be used to rule the nation. The rule of of a nation instead, should be based on laws that are equal to all.
She also pointed out that the Malay Muslims are the most underprivileged since every aspect of their life is being dictated by the authorities.
"What is happening in our country scares me, we are losing our identity as a Malaysian .
"People said that the Malays has more privilege but to be honest as a mix Malay myself, I feel that we are the most underprivileged where are told how to life our daily lives, how to dress, how to express ourselves, what to eat, how to talk, force to do things in your life, who to mix with, how to treat woman and basically our life is controlled by this people that uses their power given to them by us."
Nisha also raised concerned over the phenomenon of rising 'Arabisation' within the Malay culture and language which has gone unchecked and yet lawmakers were more concerned about increasing penalty of the shariah court.
"The most sad part is, even our identity as a Malay have been change towards Arabisation.
"Our traditional attire such as baju kurung , baju kebaya , baju melayu have been replaced by clothes that suits our country weather and culture.
"Even our own Malay words have been replaced by Arabic words such as simple buka puasa now has been change to iftar. Where is our own ownership towards our own culture and identity? Now we have this law?"

JUSTICE FOR ALL REGARDLESS OF GENDER IDENTITY
Justice for Sisters is appalled by the news of a trans woman who was fined RM 700 on June 21 for failing to produce her identification card. She apparently stated that she had just been released from jail and suffered from tuberculosis. The Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Nur Farah Adilah Noordin urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to serve as a lesson. The woman was not represented in court.
Access to justice, and the right to redress and remedy are our fundamental human rights guaranteed in several clauses of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Federal Constitution. In 2011, after hearing that ‘an estimated 80% of those tried in court for criminal offences did not have legal representation,’ the Malaysian government launched the National Legal Aid Foundation. Despite this effort, many people continue to be tried in court without representation, and as a result are imposed harsh and sometimes excessive penalties.
Because of their gender identity and the resulting systemic and social discrimination and prejudice, trans people are even more vulnerable and disproportionately face barriers when attempting to access justice. They are arrested more frequently, and hence encounter a higher incidence of trial without representation. Based on media reports and our documentation, at least 63 trans women were arrested between January and May 2016 in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Kedah and Pahang by police and the state religious departments for simply being themselves.
It is extremely distressing that the DPP urged the court to impose a heavy sentence simply to serve as a lesson to the trans woman for failing to produce her IC, while ignoring her reasons. The DPP’s heavy handed recommendations are problematic, and underscore the multiple forms of stigma, discrimination and prejudice that the trans woman was subjected to because of her gender identity, history of being jailed and having a criminal record, history of drug use, and so on.
In Malaysia, the system causes and reinforces the targeting and discrimination trans people. Trans people are not allowed to change their name, gender, and the last digit in their identification card number or in any other legal documents. The government’s refusal to allow trans people to change details in their identification documents to reflect trans people’s authentic identities makes trans persons vulnerable to stigma, discrimination and violence, including denial of employment opportunities, humiliating experiences when forced to use their identification card, and arbitrary arrests, among others.
The imposition of punitive measures increases the challenges and barriers for people, especially transgender persons with criminal records, to reintegrate themselves into society, as they are continuously penalised over non-issues. This has a lasting and negative impact on a person’s wellbeing. In addition, the state must understand and address the barriers that people with criminal records face in securing jobs, finding housing, reconciling relationships with friends and family among others. It is absurd and inhumane to continue penalising and profiting from people who have been failed by the system.
Media
We are further appalled by the continuous misgendering and the use of inaccurate terms by the media, such as Bernama, to address transgender persons. Trans women are not cross dressers.Overwhelming evidence shows that trans people have existed throughout humanity, and gender identity refers to a personal sense of belonging and identification to being a girl/woman, boy/man, neither, both, a combination of gender categories and more. All identities are normal.
The news focused on her clothing and accessories, which was unnecessary and sensationalist. All people, including transgender persons have the right to self-determination to their identity, and freedom of expression. We call on the media to adopt a positive role in the promotion of human rights, and not reinforce prejudices that bar marginalised people from living their lives with dignity.
